Computer Maintenance?

What is that?

There are very few things that people spend a lot of money on that don’t need maintenance.  If you are a homeowner, you know that there is always maintenance to do like painting, cleaning windows, cleaning gutters, and the list goes on.  If you have a lawn, you have to mow, fertilize, trim bushes, and rake leaves.  If you have a car, you have to change the oil, rotate the tires, buy new tires, put gas in it and the list goes on and on.

People are definitely used to the idea of having to do maintenance on their expensive possessions.  So…I’m not sure where people got into their mind that computers don’t need maintenance.

Here is a fairly typical conversation that we have when we meet with a new customer.

Customer: “Why is my computer not as fast as I remember it?”

Metro IT:  “Have you done any computer maintenance on it?”

Customer:  “What is computer maintenance?  Shouldn’t it just work?”

It is very common that their computer’s have not had any maintenance done on them ever.  There will be icons on their desktop that they have never clicked on and were there when they bought the computer.  There will be programs that they have never used but are consuming computer resources.  If that sounds like you, lack of computer maintenance is the leading cause for computer slowness.

There are quite a few tasks that go into computer maintenance.  Here are 5 of the most common.

1.     Uninstalling programs that you don’t use or no longer use
2.    Clearing temporary files
3.    Defragmenting the hard drive
4.    Applying services patches to the operating systems and programs.
5.    Backup important files

Generally, none of these tasks are terribly difficult if you know what you are doing.  However, they do need to be done a regular basis so they can be time consuming.  If you don’t know what you are doing or how you should do them, then you should speak with your IT consultant so they can help you.
