Why do people send me spam?

Money.

Unsolicited commercial email, which is more commonly known as spam, is big business.  The reason for spam is simple.  Spammers send out these emails to make money.  When they send out their email, they aren’t just sending it to you but to also to millions of other people.  Even if they get a miniscule amount of people to respond to their message to buy, they win.  The math is simple.  If the spammers send out 1 million messages in a particular campaign and they get 1/100 of a percent (.01%) of people to buy, that is 100 buyers.  If they send out more messages then the number of buyers goes up even if their percentage stays the same.

What can a person do to stop from getting spam?

The easiest thing you can do is not to share or post your email address on the internet.  If spammers don’t know what your email address is, they can’t send email to you.  However, once you get on a spammer list, there is no getting off because the spammer will sell your email address to other spammers as a source of income.

As a business owner, don’t post your employees email addresses on the company website because spammers have their own search engines (spam-bots) that look for new addresses on the internet.  An unprotected publicly available email address on the internet will start getting spam in less than 2 weeks.  There are ways to display your email address on your business website that will make it hard for the spam-bots to get it yet make it easy for your customers to get in contact with you.

My email address has been compromised.  Now what?

You will need some sort of filter to protect your inbox from all of the spam.  If you currently have a spam filtering solution and you are getting more than 1 spam a week, you should get a 2nd opinion.  With the right tools, it is very manageable.  As a business owner, there is no reason for you or your employees to be getting spam.  Spam filtering is very affordable when compared to the cost of dealing with it.  No one needs to get spam.  Protect yourself.  Be prepared.
